Progress Report from the Bishop Nominating Committee

The Bishop Nominating Committee is making great strides toward generating a slate of candidates to present to the standing committee by the end of October. Nominating sub-committees have continued to work diligently over the last month and here are their latest progress updates as of August 31, 2018.

The work of all the teams except for the references, discernment retreat, and communications sub-committees has been completed.

References: The first level of reference checks is now complete. The second level of reference and background checking through the Oxford Documents is now in process and scheduled to be completed by September 21.

Discernment Retreat: Candidates have been invited to the discernment retreat to be held in early October. Exercises are being designed which will allow members of the nominating committee to interact with and observe the candidates in a variety of settings, from large group activities to individual interviews. Following our discernment retreat, the nominating committee will meet for another day of discernment to select the final slate of candidates.

Communications: We are requesting photos from each of the potential candidates for bishop and will soon ask for an audio recording of who they are, where they are from and what calls them to seek the episcopate in San Diego. With this, we intend to make a video introducing the candidates to the diocese as soon as the slate is selected. This video will be on the diocesan website and is to be shown at convention. We continue to support other sub-committees in sending diocesan wide announcements, links to sub-committee documents, and regular progress reports—like this one!
